Don’t worry — your ears aren’t playing tricks on you. That really is the return of Counting Crows and Collective Soul at the tail-end of our 2004 Rock Essentials, bringing us back to the mid-’90s with snap-crackle-pop chords (“Counting the Days”) and honey-dipped harmonies (“Accidentally In Love”). And if that’s too uplifting for your tastes, there’s always the vein-popping screamo of the Used (“Take It Away”), the blood-letting balladry of Papa Roach (“Scars”), and the Walkmen telling it like it is right alongside the rainstorm riffs of “The Rat.”
