From the Killers and Kings of Leon to My Chemical Romance and Crossfade, 2005 had more than its fair share of breakthrough rock bands. It was really a year marked by second chances, though. With Velvet Revolver and Audioslave, that meant going the supergroup route — outrunning the Central Park-sized shadows of Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, and Guns N’ Roses with truly original bits of power balladry (“Be Yourself,” “Fall to Pieces”) and shock-treated arena-rock anthems (“Dirty Little Thing,” “Doesn’t Remind Me”). System of a Down were just as restless, splitting their personalities across two speaker-melting albums — Mesmerize and Hypnotize — before deciding to take a long break. And Nine Inch Nails were back with a vengeance, keeping things loud and lean on their long-awaited With Teeth album.
