The next time someone says modern rock lost the plot a long time ago, you might want to point them towards 2006’s top releases. After all, the Red Hot Chili Peppers wasn’t the only band that delivered two towering, genre-jumping discs in one year. While System of a Down’s second album in just six months kicked out the jams alongside the growing presence of guitarist/singer Daron Malakian (“Lonely Day” and “Hypnotize” both benefit from his dovetailing melodies), Foo Fighters pounded their guitar pedals on the electrified side (“No Way Back,” “DOA”) of their double dose In Your Honor. And if that’s not enough to leave your head spinning, you could always crank everything from Blink-182 side projects (Angels & Airwaves, +44) to Jared Leto’s rock-star rebirth (30 Seconds to Mars).
