Comment:

Possibly the toughest mix I've had to make yet, but almost the most fun. My gf passed along a request from her sister - a "sea shanty" mix. I ran with the theme, figuring anyone can go buy a sea shanty CD, but I could make something really interesting. All of these tunes are either actual sea shanties (Leave Her Johnny, Blow Ye Winds, etc.), have a nautical theme (Slip Jigs & Reels, Off To Sea), or are in the style of sea shanties (Luang Prabang, General Taylor). Knowing one of her favorite songs is "Edmund Fitzgerald," I included not only the Tony Rice cover but two versions of "Back Home In Derry," which uses words by Irish hunger-striker Bobby Sands over the Gordon Lightfoot music. My other favorite inclusion is Anthrax's take on "Friggin' in the Riggin'," which is re-written as a tale of their roadie's debauchery. All in all, I think it's a strong answer to a serious challenge, and actually makes for a really enjoyable listen. The title comes from Robert Hunter's "Rum Runners."

Excellent! I love sea shanties. This is extremely original in a sea of emo and indie mixes. Hell... Sea shanties are more indie than indie.

as the proud owner of not one but three collections of sea shanties on CD, i must say you've done fans of the genre very proud. An excellent project, truly well done. the pogues cover is a must.
