Comment:
Guilty pleasure territory here, kids. Some of my fave music moments from film and tv - fake bands, alter ego bands, semi-real bands, completely fabricated acts and more! Who's the winner in this battle of the faux bands? Why you the listening audience, of course. Sorry for the multiple submissions by a couple acts. Well, I'm not *really* sorry. After all, even Rob Conroy will admit that the Rutles were better than the Beatles. There are many more acts in this category - I look forward to alternate takes on this genre. Also, Monkees "For Pete's Sake" is the actual track 4. Sorry, gang.Feedback:
I know I'm in for something good when I see your name under the last 100 submissions, and this is no exception. Great idea for a mix! Faux bands rock! Love the Carrie Nations (thanks for turning me on to them) and the Rutles. I'm still waiting for all the Ohio Express records to be rereleased.
"After all, even Rob Conroy will admit that the Rutles were better than the Beatles"
ha ha, funny, a very cool mix
ha ha, funny, a very cool mix
Ahem. What about the Monkees? Great mix, by the way. =)
This looks awesome . Can you throw one of these in the next package you send me. The Carrie Nations rule, I'm on a Russ Meyer kick lately, They've been playing all of his movies on T.V. lately. I think someone named Mama Lion wrote all the songs for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
hey awesome idea...one question though, someone told me that The Wonders songs were really all performed by Fountains of Wayne...do you know if that's true?
Looks like just another killer disc. I think I might need to have this. No, I definitely need to have this. What can I do for you? ;)
Another good idea, Sean, and consequently, another great mix from yourself. Quite a few things here which I haven't heard, and you can assume I want just about anything you produce.
Great idea, great mix! In rock and pop music, it's not always easy to draw the line between "fake" and "real" (or between pre-fab and just plain fab!).
One of those questions which kept PKD up very late at night..."what is real?" "Artifacts as artifice." Much fun to be had here, "real" or not.., the performers seem to be in earnest, do they not? (and why do I *think* I hear, very subtle, on my Rutles vinyl, near the end of "Piggy In the Middle"..."Rob buried Dirk..."?)
Great idea and a cool mix. "Cheese and Onions" does not a better-than-the-Beatles band make... ;-)
Monkees? Yeesh! There is clearly a Monkees track on this disc - I forgot to list it for some reason - it was all that editing to get rid of the "sleep" moniker. Anyway, "For Pete's Sake" falls between The Wonders (who are, at least in part, Fountains of Wayne) and Bryan Slade. What is real, indeed?
Lance Link & the Evolution Revolution could have kicked their asses!
Great idea> I was going to do such a mix myself (might still do it).
Lance Link indeed! But does anyone out there have any Lance Link? I've been looking for ages.
I've monkeyed around with lookin' for 'em..., seems to be a secret .
Wonderful stuff. I suppose for variety you could have added the Sex Pistols (to the extent they were fabricated by Malcolm McLaren). And to answer the question below, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne wrote "That Thing You Do," but the Fountains didn't perform it.
Great stuff Sean.
great idea, wonderful mix! and let me say that your "free-ke-ow-tee"-mix is superb! real kickin' stuff!! and wreckless eric is king! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I love this! I think I'm going to make this mix with a few changes...for example, I think I might add a track by Polaris, who were basically Miracle Legion, the band from Nickelodeon's Pete & Pete. I just need to find the (free with cereal labels)cassette.
how postmodern!
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
To Marc: I'm sorry, but I don't buy this notion of McLaren as controlling Svengali to the Sex Pistols. Johnny Rotten was entirely too combustible to have been Malcolm's puppet... just an aside...
Great gravy! When is a band not a band? Never imagined there was a "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" S/T. The best looking band ever! I second the comments on The Evolution Revolution. How 'bout The Banana Splits? Maybe for volume two?
Great theme! Other suggestions are DVDA, which is Matt Stone & Trey Parker of South Park fame; possibly the band from Eddie & the Cruisers, aka the Beaver Brown band.
Very creative theme! I have always liked a song called "Skipping Stones" by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Splinter on vocals.
poopdeck pete passed away today whilest listening to his favorite cd by the fall...don't miss him, he's at piece (hee hee hee)
Sean, came across a website dedicated to fake bands: Rocklopedia Fakebandica
