Comment:
My favorite 80 minutes of these pioneering East Kilbride noise pop subversives, in honor of the fact that I'm currently reading about them extensively in the fine book "The Creation Records Story: My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry for the Prize". All selections courtesy of the collective record collections of Jen, Sean & Kat and myself. I opted to skip their last two releases ("Hate Rock 'n' Roll" and "Munki") and primarily zero in on the early-to-mid-period stuff that's closest to my heart. There may actually be a volume two, believe it or not, as it really hurt to cut the following tracks: "Nine Million Rainy Days", "Sowing Seeds", "My Girl", "Happy Place", "On the Wall", "About You", and "Kill Surf City".Feedback:
Good mix, Rob. I do believe they were slightly overrated, but this is definitely a worthy collection.
I know what you mean, Gerry. I was just telling Jen last night (as I/we was/were compiling this) that I think these guys have three songs: 1) the really pretty, fuzz-drenched love song that has killer pop hooks; 2) the propulsive, mid-tempo tune with killer pop hooks and a fair amount of feedback; and 3) the feedback-drenched, screeching drone with zero pop hooks. Although I understand that these categories occasionally overlap, I tried to stick primarily with songs 1 and 2 on this collection. :-)
My two favourite songs by them together (just like honey and the hardest walk)! very nice...
i haven't listened to these guys in years! this looks like a great mix.
That's one more song than I count for them, Rob. In fact, I think it's just the same Beach Boys cover played either fast or slow. Still, a favorite band of mine. At the time of that first LP, I was certain I was witnessing someone shaking up the 80's the way the Pistols did the previous decade. Just noted the anniversary of the weekend I caught both JaMC & Motorhead. Man, no wonder my hearing's going.
For a brief shining moment in the late '80's, there were two things you could count on: Every music hipster had a copy of Psychocandy in his/her collection; and few ever listened to it. That goes for me as well. Groundbreaking as their early stuff may have been, with a few exceptions (captured on my own J&MC mix), I don't listen to their noisier stuff much these days. Indeed, the one J&MC album I still listen to with some frequency is the mostly-acoustic, non-feedback Stoned & Dethroned, a wonderful album which I take (based on its absence from your mix) didn't impress you nearly as much. Alas, it's out of print, but I highly encourage people to track that one down.
Jim: I stand corrected--that is indeed another song of theirs. Marc: I like that album fairly well and there are four songs from it here (the last four)... I do prefer the early stuff, though, honestly.
I still remember when I first heard Psychocandy. On half the songs the level meters on my tape deck were frozen in the same position as the droning feedback emitted from my speakers. As critically revered as that debut record was, I found more joy in their subsequent albums. Even their last record, Munki, is one of my favorites. It's a shame all their releases, except for the recent greatest hits collection, are all out of print to my knowledge. Oh yes, great mix!
this is very nice, but i have to echo gerry's sentiment...creation put out so many better, ignored records than the jesus and mary chain. then again, they also put out worse (oasis, anyone?)
Nothing wrong with Oasis, Brandt... I bet if they hadn't hit with "Wonderwall" you'd worship them. ;-)
once upon a time i was backstage at wembley arena Happy mondays concert and i start chatting and having a couple of beers with William Reid, he was pretty boring ;) but the band are not, i'm not sure they even can spell that word word,
i use to dislike this band. thought they were boring. not anymore. great mix.
Apparently, we have "Honey's Dead" around here somewhere - sorry that I couldn't find it for you. I like their sound, but it wears thin after a while. Still, "Never Understand" was a pretty great song.
..those around for this band's incursion were all fast to come around, I enjoy them in single track formula now...., you have some great stuff here though, I wouldn't argue about inclusion/exclusion....("Head On" still gets me pumped for a night out, or a night in, or just a night...)
Good Mix! I should throw on phyco candy sometime. I used to LOVE these guys. Anyway, nice work!
