As wide-ranging as Alison Krauss's gifts are, there's that crucial element — something that's just undeniably [i]Alison/i] — that illuminates every avenue she travels. She takes over Todd Rundgren's soulful power pop ballad "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," her hushed, honeyed notes warming the very air they glide along. On "Love You in Vain," her voice cuts through Union Station's harmonies with the kind of heartsick cry that's as timeless in its tragedy as Hank Williams or [i]Hamlet[/i]. And even when she's playing a supporting role, Krauss still sounds award-worthy — that glow when she chimes in on Vince Gill's simmering "The Reason Why" couldn't possibly come from [i]any[/i] other power source.
