Simon & Garfunkel
Comment:
After a brief shot at pop popularity as Tom & Jerry in the late '50s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel ditched the pseudonyms and hopped on board the Greenwich Village-bound hootenanny train. But it took producer Tom Wilson — without the duo's knowledge — re-cutting the backing track for "The Sounds of Silence" to launch Simon & Garfunkel into the folk-rock stratosphere. The duo's harmonies wound around each other more fluidly, more gorgeously, than even the Everly Brothers', and in Simon the pair had a world-class songwriter on call. Their career often resembled a marriage — with more than an average couple's share of breakups, make-ups, and shakeups — and the duo lasted for only six studio albums before calling it quits for good (until their reunion tour, breakup, and reunion tour cycle got going in the '80s). Folk rock just doesn't get any better then this.
