Sarah McLachlan, dance diva — who would've figured? But on "Silence," working with the Canadian electronica band Delerium, her creamy vocals smooth over the synth-driven arrangement's jagged edges and lift the veil on what could be an intriguing new direction that would expose her — and her music — to an entirely new audience. On the [i]Afterglow Live[/i] album's retooled version of "Building a Mystery," McLachlan proves that a slight tweak can make a huge impact; by ramping up the tempo and adding a pinch of grit, she adds an emotional urgency to the song's religious overtones. And on "Perfect Girl," Sarah airily layers her voice like a bittersweet [i]parfait[/i] as she offers Zen-like advice to a soon-to-be-ex-lover.
