Comment:
As the driving force behind the Cure, Robert Smith is an undeniable alt-rock icon, his bird’s-nest hairdo and makeup-caked visage as much a part of pop culture as his tunes. Still, over the years, he found plenty of time to play hooky from his day job. In the ’80s, he blew off some steam with psychedelia-influenced supergroup the Glove alongside Siouxsie & The Banshees’ Steve Severin — but despite the sonic similarities, that’s Jeanette Landray, not Siouxsie singing on “Like an Animal.” More recently, Smith ventured into another kind of trippy territory with his woozy, electro-orchestral version of the old Alice in Wonderland tune “Very Good Advice.” He even gets his ya-ya’s out, adding vocals to Belgian house king Junior Jack’s jumping “Da Hype” — when Smith sings “It’s so good to play,” you just know the old goth hero is getting down and having fun.
