Electronica 101
Comment:
The DJs are coming! The DJs are coming! So went the deafening rally cry of electronica in the mid- to late '90s, as globe-trotting acts like Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, and Moby dropped club-/headphone-bound dance music into the welcoming arms of Americans who didn't want to rock 'n' roll all night anymore — at least not with guitars as their guide. The banging Beatles allusions of "Let Forever Be," the skull-crushing basslines of "Born Slippy Nuxx," and nearly every Prodigy song ever made are all as capable of conquering arenas as the Stones on their best day. As for nights that demand a warm blanket and buckets of tea, they're covered by electronica's softer side, from the beat-backed jazz singer of "Going Round" to the definitive trip-hop tracks of Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky (heard here covering Public Enemy), and Lamb.
