If you've ever wondered what bands were blasted on Metallica's tour bus back in the '80s, here are a few hints: the unsung NWOBHM heroes in Diamond Head (see: the seared solos and epic, nearly eight-minute build of "Am I Evil") and the pavement-peeling guitar leads of Accept ("Fast As a Shark," a.k.a. one of the scene's first speed-metal songs). As for what other metalheads prefer, Pentagram, Cathedral, and Candlemass worship at the same doom-metal altar as Black Sabbath; Immortal, Burzum, and Mayhem are as frosty and downright frightening as Norwegian black metal gets; and Kylesa is a perfect example of just how genre-less modern metal can be. ("Scapegoat" is an adrenaline shot cut with strains of hardcore punk and crusty rock.)
