Comment:

Downtempo comes out of club culture, but it’s about much more than just beats. Bands who base their sounds around singers and pop-schooled song structures dive into the downtempo pool all the time, and here’s where they get wet. Alpha started out on the trip-hop tip, but they reached another level when they let loose the rueful romantic croon of “Lipstick from the Asylum.” While Fever Ray’s specialty may be Björk-meets-Depeche Mode synth-pop, the subtle slip-and-slide of “When I Grow Up” wound up being one of their biggest tracks. Hell, even Radiohead roams into a dubby twilight haze when Fila Brazillia brings some moody mixology to their OK Computer track “Climbing Up the Walls.”
