Comment:

As Tommy Ramone once said, "By 1973, I knew that what was needed was some pure, stripped down, no bull**** rock 'n' roll." In other words, the birth of punk had as much to do with raging against the pretentious pop and rock of the early '70s as it did the riot-triggering, blood-smearing night's work of Iggy Pop. Following the stripped-down sounds and extended middle fingers of punk's pioneers, the music and scene has died and been reborn so many times (the adrenaline-shot tempos/political unrest of '80s hardcore, the chart-conquering takeover of the '90s revival), it's only a matter of time before everyone's singing some variation of "I wanna be anarchy!" once again. Without further ado, we give you three decades of the greatest songs punk rock has ever produced, from the Germs to Green Day, the Stranglers to Sum 41…safety pins and band buttons not included.
