Comment:

This tape was started for a friend around Christmas time before she returned to college up in New York, many miles from my home in Central Pennsylvania. I am a greedy bastard so I got half-finished and decided I wanted to keep it. Now a month later she's going through a bit of a rough patch, so I've decided to wrap it up and send it to her. I can't be there in person to comfort her, so this is a vague attempt to sympathize/self-medicate, if you will. Most of this was made before I found out she wasn't in the best of spirits since her return to school so some of this seems prophetically-melancholy.

NOTES: "Barbie Girl" is a punkified cover of the Aqua tune done by a band who opened for Reel Big Fish when I went to see them in the spring. I bought their EP. Okay, okay, the Mustard Plug tune has turned up on two straight mixes but I love it and it's happy and it might help her so there. This is the last time for a while, promise. I didn't have a track listing for the first half I did, so I forgot that I'd included "A Boy Named Sue" and that explains the double dose of Cash. I'm not sure you can ever hear too much of the man in black, though, so whatever. The title is derived from the Interpol song "NYC" which isn't on this tape but easily could be if I felt like putting it up but I didn't. I just realized that almost half the songs have either "girl" or "woman" in the title, a fact I was not aware of while making the comp. Maybe I was getting at something subconsciously. What, precisely, however, I don't know.
