Comment:
Neil had more great material between '66 and '80 than I've had the guts to compile. The '80's were odd, with Neil experimenting a great deal, resulting in some interesting work (and some truly terrible work). But after getting sued by Geffen for failing to create "Neil Young music," Neil compensated in the '90's by releasing noting BUT Neil Young music -- alternating ragged, crunchy rockers with Crazy Horse (or Pearl Jam) with acoustic country-tinged stuff, interspersed with a fair number of live albums. Resulting in a more consistent decade, if a far less innovative one. Can't say he's produced any must-own albums in a long time (maybe since '90's Ragged Glory), but each album has a couple memorable tracks. All of which can be found here, avoiding any need to slog through the actual albums.
Feedback:
I actually like Silver & Gold better than Ragged Glory, Marc. Interesting effort, although I can't say I'm much of a fan of any of his stuff post-Reactor.
I don't know. Freedom was pretty rockin' Of course that was 89, but you do have a song from it.
Didn't you say (in a recent comment on one of Rob's Who mixes) that you weren't gonna buy anything by artists who vote Republican? Well, er, um . . .
I don't know if Neil votes Republican or not, and I don't care. Some of my best friends talk to Republicans! Voting Republican, while being something that I don't really understand, is clearly not as reprehensible as the Townshend/porn case. My wife used to work for Neil's label and got to hang out with him for a while when he was in town a few years back - a total sweetheart, apparently. His voting record doesn't make him any less an artist - it *might* make him someone I wouldn't want to marry, though :-)
I'm not sure if he votes at all -- did he ever officially give up Canadian citizenship? At least he's denounced his (apparent) one-time support of Reagan. In any event, that was a bit of hyperbole on my part -- as far as I can tell, Neil is something of a stand-up guy, donating plenty of time to Farm Aid and his Bridge benefits.
whoa taking lyrics to the extreme you must be proud of yourself to judge music by a cover
