Legacy - The World of Merle Haggard
Comment:
The Bakersfield Sound may have achieved its first blush of fame during Merle's career, but it by no means stopped there; self-proclaimed Haggard disciple Dwight Yoakam topped the Country charts with the honky-tonkin' tear-jerker "I Sang Dixie." Haggard himself was originally scheduled to produce country-rock legend Gram Parsons' solo debut, but Merle's divorce sent the project into a tailspin; despite his disappointment, Parsons bridges the gap between Kern Canyon and Laurel Canyon in the haunting heartbreak of "Brass Buttons." Even the Grateful Dead, who often covered Merle in concert, offer up a hunk of Hag homage in the devil-demands-his-due drama "Dire Wolf." And perhaps the most powerful legacy any artist can leave is a next generation — in this case, Merle's son Marty, who kicks out a saga of sin 'n' salvation worthy of his dad in "The Bridge." From Emmylou Harris to Alan Jackson, you may be able take the music out of Bakersfield, but you can't take Bakersfield out of the music.
