Comment:

Merle's golden years were also the golden years of country music; he played on a big stage, and he played alongside some of the very best. Buck Owens provided Merle with his first big gig and his second wife; on the chart-topping "Together Again," Buck & co. don't sound particularly overjoyed about a lovers' reunion, but the song really lets the pedal steel moan. Country legend George Jones (like Merle, a singer's singer) mopes around the emptiness of his house — and his life — in the post-breakup misery of "The Grand Tour." Dolly Parton, who pulled herself up from poverty into country singer/songwriter royalty (in addition to being the object of Hag's misplaced affection), rhapsodizes over her dirt-poor youth in "Coat of Many Colors." And fellow ex-con David Allan Coe lays out a blueprint for the perfect country song in "You Never Even Called Me By My Name." From Willie Nelson to Kris Kristofferson, we've got a galaxy of stars that shone from Nashville all the way to Bakersfield.
