Comment:

With bookish lyrics, well-chiseled features, and a sexual ambivalence that only added to his mystique, Morrissey was the thinking girl's — or guy's — '80s alt-rock poster boy. But he didn't soar to that status on his own; Johnny Marr's almost otherworldly six-string soundscapes and the musical momentum of rhythm boys Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke completed the picture. Together, they made being miserable sound like more fun than just about anything else the era had to offer, and before long, every young outsider within earshot of a college-radio transmitter became part of the big, deliciously dysfunctional family that proudly called themselves Smiths fans. Whether you're already mad for the men from Manchester or this is your introduction to their short-but-sweet story, there's plenty of room for you at the table we've set to overflowing with Smiths Essentials.
