Comment:
Tho' my tastes are pretty universal, I suppose their default setting has to be the Canterbury Scene.I put this mix together a few years ago & if I were to do it again, there might be a few changes eg Delivery & Egg neither of whom I had sounds by at the time would get in.
Purists might question some of the inclusions. For me Canterbury is more a case of attitude than geography.
The Zombies: opened the door for middle-class grammar-school boys singing in non-butch English accents & besides, it ties in nicely w\ the last track.
Bon Scott & The Valentines: Yes, THAT Bon Scott. One of the few Soft Machine covers extant. Makes you wonder how it found its way over to Australia tho'. Perhaps reciprocating Karma for them supplying us Daevid Allen?
King Crimson: Keith Tippett on Piano & his importance to the movement can't be over-stated.
Roxy Music: The composing credit ghoes to Ferry; production by Pete Sinfield but this one has Eno's dabs all over it & HE definitely was a Canterburyist.
Side 2 reflects the influence of Cale & his part in the June 1st 1974 gig (perhaps the Canterbury highwater mark) & the passing of the torch to Henry Cow & their Rock In Opposition colleagues & affiliates.
Curtis seems partial to this sort of thing. I'd be interested in hearing his comments.
Feedback:
yeah, this is a GREAT tribute to canterbury-scene. didn't know that gong fitted in there.
Well, well, well. First comment, purism is for the dim-witted. I would agree that the Canterbury "scene" was more about attitutde than geography, heterogeny more than "sound." Second comment, I am absolutely partial to this stuff, my day is not complete unless I've heard Slapp Happy's "The Drum" at least once. Third comment, I've never much cared for the June 1st 1974 gig (listening to it again right now), so can't agree about it being the highwater mark. Very nice selection here. Love the inclusion of Keith Tippett, Lol Coxhill, Gong and my beloved Art Bears. I've never heard that Bon Scott & the Valentines track...do I want to? I suppose I do. Let me know if you'd like to trade this. Disclaimer: all misspellings are my own. I really wish the feedback text box was larger...
seeing this made my weekend! the most underrated bands in rock history, spesh slapp happy and kevin ayers. and somehow you managed to pick among my favorite hatfield, matching mole, wilde flowers and king crimson songs. fanbloodytastic.
This is great...Gorky's Zygotic Mynci have covered O Caroline (in Welsh) and Why Are We Sleeping?, and also recorded a song called Kevin Ayers, as an unexpected footnote - you should search them out.
Wow!This is truly excellent (sorry I missed it earlier). If you like to trade please mail me.These are the kind of mixes that make AotM such a gem :~)
