Led since its late-'80s formation by charismatic leather-clad hell-hound Dave Wyndorf, New Jersey's Monster Magnet has taken stoner rock to astral heights, cleverly pouring a host of retro elements — including hard rock, psychedelia and metal — into one big irresistible black hole of noise that sucks in everything within earshot. Waylaid in its rise to power by the mid-'90s dominance of the grunge scene, the band finally broke through with 1998's Powertrip: here, we kick off with the stripper-pole anthem "Space Lord" and the blistering "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" from second major label outing Dopes to Infinity (1995). Monster Magnet does subtlety and bombast with equal aplomb, in Next Steps.
