Comment:

My favorite 80 minutes by a band that I belatedly discovered just a few years ago (when they were in their prime--and while I was busy occupying myself with the entire SST roster and the Replacements--I mistakenly grouped them with other New Wave "hair" artists like A Flock of Seagulls and Howard Jones). As it turns out, I love their first four albums enough that this collection almost spilled to a second volume. Songs that almost made it: "Nocturnal Me," "Stars Are Stars,""Gods Will Be Gods," "Ripeness,""Rescue", "My White Devil," "Never Stop (Discoteque)," "All You Need is Love," "Crocodiles" and "The Puppet." (FYI: This mix was re-titled and updated on 1/20/08.)

Another band I've been meaning to get in to. My only real exposure to them is their cover of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". I heard somewhere that they were similar to the Jesus and Mary Chain, but I don't know if that is accurate or not. I'm not terribly helpful.

These guys were one of the best live bands of the 80s (I was lucky to see them perform a couple times). That Beatles cover is also great, incorporating bits of Dylan and James Brown. Oh yes, love the mix too!

This is the only mix on the "last 100" list which has been posted by someone whose name actually rings a bell, so to speak. This is starting to get kinda annoying. And lest I forget: unfortunately, I never saw them perform live, but they WERE a great band indeed.

I've always been a big fan of Echo's early stuff. I was lucky enough to get to see them on a double bill with The Church back in '85. Awesome live band. A volume 2 should definitely be in order. Great mix, Rob.

Excellent Rob. Hate to see "The Puppet" dropped though.

One of my favorites from the early eighties. A terrific live act as well. I'd say the cutting of Simple Stuff is what demands a second volume. Plus the rest of Heaven Up Here.

Great--you've even got "Clay", my favorite Echo song. I saw them in '87 with New Order and Gene Loves Jezebel. New Order was okay; Gene Loves Jezebel sucked; Echo and the Bunnymen were fantastic.

I share lo-fi's comments. Heaven Up Here is great and as a live act they were top notch.

a band i absolutely loved in the 80s. nice mix, rob. as far as omd goes, don't dismiss them totally - they had two pretty good albums in the early 80s, those being "architecture and morality", and "dazzle ships" - so it wasn't all fluff like people think.

Great band..., oft-misunderstood and lumped into non-applicable categories or genres which have nothing to do with their output. Some great choices here, I'd have to have "Villiers Terrace"..., pssoibly "Never Stop" and "Over the Wall." (I'm also with Sue on OMD.)

this obviously looks mighty cool. and yeah, the beatles cover is spectacular. i love their cover of 'people are strange' too. it doesn't really make a huge difference from the original version but i still love the echo version more. i'm a bit surpirsed that thorn of crowns didn't make it though. not even in the 'almost made it' group.
