Oasis quickly picked up a reputation as brawling rockers who'd take on anyone, anywhere . . . and failing that, the Gallagher brothers would simply fight each other. Turns out, though, that they were actually pretty sensitive guys, as this trail of heartwarming ballads abundantly confirms. In the wistful, wispy "Half the World Away," Noel takes his main cue from the easygoing airiness of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "This Guy's In Love With You." Although less prolific than his older brother, songwriter Liam — inspired by then-girlfriend Nicole Appleton — steps up to the plate in the love-dusted "Songbird." And then there's the group's definitive ballad, "Wonderwall" — a track U2's The Edge said he wished he'd written — sounding just as euphoric in its original, delicately layered form as it does sung by thousands in British soccer stadiums. As the rest of our acoustic Oasis songs attest, rock's biggest bruisers might've also been its most sophisticated modern troubadours.
