Covers - The World of Oasis
Comment:
Turning on the old rock 'n' roll swagger is one thing — backing it up with world-class songs is entirely another, but in Noel Gallagher Oasis has a truly brilliant tunesmith. Which explains why his work has attracted so many covers, including Rod Stewart's leather-lunged, bar-band take on "Cigarettes & Alcohol," a track that could as easily have been written for The Faces as it was for Oasis. If you can't imagine associating our Manchester lads with freak folk, think again after hearing Devendra Banhart's cover of "Don't Look Back In Anger" — it's weird and dark, full of vocal ticks and strangeness, and that's precisely why it'll win you over. And Paul Anka's finger-poppin', big-band version of "Wonderwall" places itself a million miles from Cool Britannia, and stands as further proof of the incredible extent of the band's influence. Think about it: here's the man who penned many a classic standard, and wrote the lyrics for Sinatra's "My Way," covering one of Noel's tunes. Now cue up Ryan Adams, Matt Pond PA, Brad Mehldau, and the other artists who've taken on the best from the Gallagher pen.
