It can't be easy to be a chip off the old block, if the old block is Serge Gainsbourg . . . but actress/recording artist Charlotte Gainsbourg has risen to the challenge and approached every facet of her career with a healthy respect for the art of provocation. She made one of her earliest trips to the recording studio to cut a duet with her dad called "Lemon Incest" — an electro-pop reworking of Chopin's "Tristesse" — while barely a teenager, and seemed to have treated her 1986 debut album as something of a one-off, until she returned almost two decades down the line with Etienne Daho ("If," "L'inconstant"), as a prelude to her second solo full-length, 5:55, featuring a title track written by Air in collaboration with Jarvis Cocker. IRM (2009), which contains the single "Heaven Can Wait" and the stylishly sinister "Le chat du Café des Artistes," took her to Los Angeles, where she hooked up with Beck.
