Estelle
Comment:
Estelle Swaray didn't exactly sprout wings with her 2004 debut album — The 18th Day, which barely cracked the Top 40 in her U.K. homeland — but what a difference a few years can make. The versatile hip-hop, R&B, soul, reggae, and pop artist became a super-hot property on the back of second long-player Shine (2008), which went Top 10 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Here, we trace her steps from early tracks like "1980" (the year she was born, and the spur for an autobiographical rap about her London childhood) to "Pretty Please (Love Me)" (a funky outing with Cee-Lo Green) to other notable hook-ups with heavyweights John Legend ("You Are") and Kanye West ("American Boy"), as well as Buzzin' Fly club cut "Pop a Cap in Yo' Ass" with Everything But the Girl's Ben Watt.
