Elvis Presley
Comment:
These tunes transport Elvis out of his leather-clad, engine-revving teen idol years into the emotionally complex adulthood that triggered his second wave of stardom. As a nylon-string, flamenco-style guitar riffs over a downy-soft string arrangement, Elvis approaches "Memories" with the wistful intimacy of an old scrapbook page being turned. In "Loving You" he couples the after-hours, "set 'em up, Joe" balladry of Frank Sinatra with a doo-wop backing chorus while declaring his everlasting fidelity, even if he's "seen with someone new." (How's that work?) And gospel flowed through Elvis' repertoire like the healing waters of the river Jordan; his stately version of "How Great Thou Art" drinks deeply from the '50s country/spiritual wellsprings of Tennessee Ernie Ford and Jim Reeves.
