Pitched as a riposte to country's slavish and too-often-predictable production line, boasting a communal approach to band composition — rotating vocalists, multiple guitar leads, shared songwriting — and signed to Bloodshot Records (home to many a genre-crunching country/roots insurgent since 1994), the Waco Brothers is everything you'd desire in a hell-for-leather bar band, and so much more. Part punk, part roots, and truly alternative (at a time when the overused alt prefix appears to have lost much of its power), the band combines British creative roots (Jon Langford from the Mekons, Alan Doughty from Jesus Jones, among others) with American musical tradition and leftist political sensibilities to potent effect. Legendary on the live circuit, the Waco Brothers walk a path beaten by the likes of the Clash and Neil Young, with enough energy, spirit, and ale to fuel a thousand rebellions.
