Comment:
Disc 1 of a 2-cd set. I'd been planning a Sonic Youth mix for some time, wavering between a 1-disc set from the glory days ('86's Evol through '92's Dirty) or a 2-disc set spanning their entire career. However, as I worked through their albums (many of which, in my old age, I've increasingly neglected), I remembered just how much amazing music they've come up with, and ended up with more picks than I'd anticipated. Hence this compromise solution. While there is some worthy post-'95 material, I'm less enamored of it. I did take some liberties with their work, fading a few tracks early (like "Mote" and "Total Trash," two of their catchiest riffs followed by 5 minutes of noisy noodling that doesn't really go anywhere), but it helps things flow.
Feedback:
Great series. I had the same reaction when I put together my double-disc "Last night I dreamed I kissed Neil Young" series a couple of years back--it was originally intended to be a single-disc retrospective, but rapidly became a multi-disc project.
This is definitely one of the most genius band in recent memory, and this comp does them justice. Great work.
What Adam said. And I love there post-1995 and noodling too.
funny cover. what the others said about this band.
Looks excellent! And props for the Simpsons cover. Homer's been the cover star on quite a few mixes lately. Where did you find the Beach Boys cover? I've been trying to find it for inclusion on the sequel to Pet Soundalikes. Perhaps a trade is in order.
The Beach Boys cover was on some long-out-of-print Beach Boys tribute album; I don't have that, but I've got a boot or two with assorted Sonic Youth rarities & b-sides. More than happy to do some trading with you.
