Comment:
I have a real soft spot for Bobby Fuller. Here's a guy who loved Buddy Holly (fellow Texan) so much that he turned a post-Holly Crickets tune (I fought the law) into a rock and roll anthem. He also wrote one of my all-time favorite surf tunes (Our favorite martian). Bobby had the looks, the hooks, a great rock and roll voice and a killer band. Sadly, he died all too young in 1966. Maybe he was a bit of a square by that point, despite a growing LSD fixation. Circumstances surrounding his death are bizarre and unsolved, and it was ruled a suicide (by carbon monoxide poisoning) only adding to the mystique. These tracks are pulled from sessions, singles, and lp's under the names Bobby Fuller and the Fanatics, the Shindigs, the Bobby Fuller Four, and just Bobby Fuller. Bobby Fuller fought the law - for you. (Trivia question - what's the connection between Bobby and Mary Tyler Moore?)Feedback:
Good selections.
Very, very nice mix. And I thought the same guy who wrote "I Fought the Law" wrote the theme to the Mary Tyler Moore show. Sonny Curtis, I think.
Nobody who knew Bobby believed it was a suicide. I's like to hear this one. Nice job Sean. I give up. Was he Mary's prom date?
Great artist, great mix.
Great mix, Sean. A smashing artist, long overdue a tribute like this one. I'll definitely be wanting this at some point in the future, my friend.
Are you trying to suggest in roundabout way that Phil Spector actually killed Bobby Fuller?
didn't the local Mafia killed him, becuase of he celebrate his No 1 single and dancing allnight with the girlfriend to the local boss, They pour gasoline in his mouth until he drowned. That's what i've heard
His mysterious death involved a beating and petrol burns and was officially declared a suicide from ingesting gas(oline)!!!, though he'd gone out to buy some acid from a hooker with a jealous boyfriend that night; other theories include a bad LSD trip covered up, or loan sharks angered at the band's not making enuff money. And Adam hit the proverbial nail right on its stoopid littlehead: Sonny Curtis wrote ITL an the MTMS theme, which is called "Love Is All Around", BTW.
This is supposed to be "little head", "IFTL" and "and", of course.
No way do I believe Bobby killed himself. There are easier ways than drinking gasoline and beating your own face to a pulp for good measure. This is a beautiful mix and a great artist.
i must admit that i only know "i fought the law". a faboulos song and i would really like to hear this mix one day.
Dude, I'd love to have a copy of this. I only know a few of his tunes but have always been fascinated by his story.
Another artist I know far too little about. Clearly, I need a copy of this mix.
Hot dog, we have a weiner! Sonny Curtis, ex-Cricket, did write both "I fought the Law" and "Love is all around". Well done, kiddies. There's a surprising amount of Bobby Fuller stuff out there - lots o' live recordings, demos, etc. The "Never to be forgotten" collection is great, but it omits my top-five pick "Angel Face" (so wonderfully covered by the Untamed Youth).
I didn't know about the Sonny Curtis connection, but you've gotta give him kudos for penning two of the finest punk covers ever (by the Clash and Husker Du, respectively).
love his stuff, although i have no recordings of his... this looks great!
This looks astounding Sean! I'd love to hear it!
sean, I'll tell you who killed bob fuller - people like leo sayer and roger hogdson, people who were doing a lot of the same type of stuff but doing it a lot better. leo sayer could rock and he never had any need for drugs. he was a real man. as for supertramp - their the greatest europeon group ever and that includes you beloved kinks who only put out about 4 good albums. their music is all about the soul, dude. do you know about soul? I don't think so. you're to worried about you're new hairdo or the latest fashionable bluejeans from wal-mart, which everybody knows is just made in a sweetshop by people who are struggling there lifes away and more than likely are listening to good tunes like the first couple of leo sayer albums to get them thru this hell on earth workday that rich musicians like you don't know a bit about. In related news, I've been reading a lot of magazines lately and would appreciate you sending me any information on meg ryan that you might have. not just another gag gift box of throw-up, please. life is not all about jokes and laughter. I love you.
Sean, I can't believe I missed this! I would love to hear it, we must trade soon!!
