Comment:
This is a mix to capture what San Franciso felt like to me in the early 1970's. What a great place and vibe! Stuff from the first CCR album will always remind me of my first visit there. Also, a double LP compilation by FM dj Voco was put out in about 1971, and the feel from that album is what I am going for here. I think that album is not availble on any format except the old cassette tape I made of it. It was fantastic.
I want to capture what CD would be playing in the car driving around on a rainy night in North Beach, looking for a little dive bar to meet up with friends, maybe after some cool concert earlier in the evening.
Of course the Dead and the Airplane are representative of the time and the scene, but I also put in some others such as Free and Shankar that do a good job capturing the blues/cosmic/psychedic/beat feel of SF in the early 1970's.
I made a volume 2 in the same structure with all different songs (except Hooker's Frisco Blues remains on v.2 in honor of the name). I will put that out later.
In my initial (beta) attempt at the mix I had a couple songs from It's a Beautiful Day (White Bird, Hot Summer Day), and Quicksilver Messenger Service (Fresh Air). Of course they were great SF bands, but I felt I captured the late night vibe better with what I have here.
I did not want obvious SF-related tunes such as San Franciscan Nights (Animals) or whatever Scott MacKenzie's song is called ("are you goin to SF with flowers in you hair?"). I wanted the blues and the beatitude to prevail.
Hope you like it.
Feedback:
looks awesome...nice work
A comment on my first mix - I meant psychedelic, not psychedic. Also, the name of the double LP compilation I referred to was Lights Out San Francisco. So I ripped off the name in honor of that wonderful album.
Nice work. Van Morrison was a "bay area babe" at that moment, too ... Moondance and tupelo honey were recorded at Wally Heider's in SF I do believe...
Nicely done.
This looks wonderful.
Oh yes, lovely stuff.
Wow. This looks fantastic. I'd love to trade if you're interested.
Great stuff. I'm particularly into your Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane (both of your Airplane picks have appeared on mixes of mine) and Dead picks.
Super! Thank you for leaving off the Scott Mackenzie.
Far out!!
Bwan,
You slay me. Your ability to capture the weltenschaung of an era is unsurpassed. I'm waiting for "Bwan's Reggae Medication" and "Headlights: Detroit."

An excellent first mix, Steve. Welcome to AOTM. Keep up the good work! I especially like the Dead, CCR and JLH trax.
sounds good!
This is fantastic!
As the proud owner of copies of this, I can say it "listens as good as it reads" ... good for what ails ya ...
I love mine! It is my walkman as I type this. :) Love "Moody Richard!" Thanks, Steve; your mix rocks!
