Grand Royal/Colleagues - The World of Beastie Boys
Comment:
Here's where we keep it all in the family, shining a spotlight not only on the artists the Beasties signed to their label, Grand Royal — merely one jewel in the trio's empire of hip — but also the ones they got with in the studio. Probably the best-known signee, Luscious Jackson, mash up an Afro-Cuban groove with sultry, come-hither vocals on their barrier-smashing "Let Yourself Get Down," featured on the imprint's first-ever release. Another card in the Grand Royal deck, Sean Lennon (in tandem with Cibo Matto vocalist Miho Hatori) mines a muito suave vibe in the bossa nova-influenced "Into the Sun," breezing his way from the Upper West Side to Rio de Janeiro in just shy of three-and-a-half minutes. And when Fatboy Slim isn't on a beach in Rio, spinning "Praise You" in front of 200,000 fans, he's likely having the track remixed by Mike D and Ad-Rock. But don't stop there: from Ad-Rock's remixes of Lady Sovereign and M.I.A. to wheels-of-steel heroes like DJ Hurricane and Mix Master Mike, we've got all the artists the Beastie Boys have kept on speed dial.
