Comment:
An artist's legacy is frequently illustrated by a family tree; in the case of the Beastie Boys, that tree would have a lot of branches. Out on a frat-friendly limb, Philly's Asher Roth soldiers on in a booze-fueled "fight for your right to party" with "I Love College," an ode to the joys of excess. Speaking of Licensed to Ill, the Beasties are every bit the godfathers of rap-rock — right alongside Run-DMC/Aerosmith — a fact not lost on Rage Against the Machine, who torch a Molotov cocktail in the sonic onslaught of "Bulls on Parade." And when it comes to comedy, what better example could you ask for than a trio of SNL writers (and Beasties biters) disguised as the band Lonely Island, dropping pounds of knowledge, like "Mr. Pibb and Red Vines equals crazy delicious!" in "Lazy Sunday." Virtually every Beasties scene and sound planted the seeds for a new crop of disciples, and from Jay-Z to Eminem to Linkin Park to Beck, the band's family tree has spread its boughs to shade pretty much every corner of the modern hip-rock-pop universe.
