Comment:
It seems kinda silly to slap together a Jam anthology, as a quick perusal of Amazon.com suggests there are now more Jam greatest hits compilations than proper albums. Still, it's worth the effort to get my own faves in one place; besides, it helps justify the $60 or so I plunked down on their box set awhile back. I may not listen to them as much as I did way back when, but they remain one of my favorite bands nonetheless.
Feedback:
Just ran the obligatory "how does this stack up against the mix I'm certain Rob Conroy has already made" search, and discovered that, natch, Rob has already posted a superb Jam mix. Substantial overlap, though a few surprising variations. (i.e. no "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight," "Wasteland," or "Smithers-Jones," probably three of my favorite Jam tunes.)
I worship these guys, Marc. Interesting mix. As I like just about all of their stuff, there aren't many dubious tracks here, but you skipped *my* three favorite Jam songs--"Liza Radley", "The Butterfly Collector" and "Monday"--when compiling your mix. Not to mention "Carnation", which could be my fourth-favorite. :-) But hey, that's why more Jam mixes should be posted (to showcase all perspectives).
An anthology of the Jam is essential. Boy, they were a great band and you've done them proud.
'Tis true - you can't go wrong with a Jam mix, though they had their share of dubious covers - "I feel good"? Ugh. Now don't get me wrong - I love the Who and the Small Faces as much as the next former Mod. For some reason, I always thought that the Jam did it better than most of the original bands. Maybe that's weird, or maybe it's the benefit of playing Mod music with punk rock attitude. It's similar to what Los Straitjackets did for surf music. Anywho, you've hit plenty o' classics here, though I too love "Monday".
I'll ditto Mr. Burns..., hail the Jam!
just what Sean said, it's really hard to go wrong with a Jam mix.
Oh, man. Here's another group I haven't listened to in far too long. I feel the record store calling....
great tribute!
