Cab Calloway was the living, breathing, swinging essence of everything the Harlem Renaissance represented. A jazzman who embraced the role of entertainer, he was the coolest, classiest cat ever to prowl the stages of happening Harlem nightspots like the Cotton Club in their '30s heyday. From his hepcat lingo to his tongue-twisting scat singing and his hip couture threads, Cab was a larger-than-life cat who cut an unforgettable figure across multiple platforms: the stage, movies, and music. With a musical mind that reached into jazz, blues, and beyond, the bandleader-supreme could take anything from the mournful moan of "St. James Infirmary" to the tongue-in-cheek "Tarzan of Harlem" and make it swing like mad. And even though some of his heaviest hitters were waxed more than 70 years ago, the crucial cuts we've gathered here make it clear why Mr. Hi De Ho will never be forgotten.
