Genuine articles like Tony Joe White aren't easy to come by: Born on a Louisiana cotton farm to a part-Cherokee family, and raised on classic blues, country, and Cajun, he had exactly the right combination of nature and nurture to pay his native swamp country its musical dues. Even though big-time success eluded him in the early '70s, at the start of his career, others took his songs onto the charts — Brooke Benton scored (as did Hank Williams, Jr.) with "Rainy Night In Georgia"; Elvis notched up several White-penned hits; Tom Jones dipped into his catalog — the man just kept on keepin' on.
