Comment:

If you ever wanted to burrow into a Hall of Fame songwriter's brain to discover how his songs evolve from blank page to brilliant performance, our First Drafts playlist grants you that ultra-rare peek behind the curtain. The first released version of Simon's jaw-jutting declaration of independence, "I Am a Rock," is essentially completely formed, just a couple of production tweaks — and an Art Garfunkel harmony — away from the song we all know and love. In Simon's demo for Graceland's African odyssey, "Homeless," he lays out a multi-tracked, Paul-on-Paul vocal roadmap that guest stars Ladysmith Black Mambazo would later set aflame in the studio. And a couple of songs-in-progress from 1973's There Goes Rhymin' Simon take very different paths: while the wistful melancholy of "American Tune" needs just a few key lyrics to fill in the ooohs, the laid-back lusciousness of "Let Me Live In Your City" gets retooled from the chorus up on its way to becoming "Something So Right." But don't stop there; we're bringing you some of your favorite Paul Simon songs . . . like you've never heard them before.
