The Clientele
Comment:
Formed in suburban England in the late '90s and cited as an influence by Fleet Foxes, the Clientele mines an uplifting, dreamy, and surreal vein of unforced, beautifully crafted pop. You could sum up the band's appeal in the title and tone of their gorgeous ode to autumn/fall, "From Brighton Beach to Santa Monica," which captures their signature blend of nostalgia, melancholy, and whimsy, signals a love of out-there '60s pop/rock (think: Love and the Zombies), and helps explain why they've built up a solid fan base on both sides of the Atlantic. Our Essentials also includes the title track from Bonfires On the Heath, where the strange, blissful feeling suggested by the instrumental sections materializes in perfectly chosen words: "Late October sunlight in the wood/nothing here quite moves the way it should."
