Gothic rock with flecks of nu-metal? Symphonic rock with a spine of goth-metal? Alt-metal forged to hard rock and chamber pop? The multitude of ways to describe the sound of Evanescence has twisted the nibs of rock writers, but such generic flexibility can only be considered a good thing for the band formed in the mid-'90s at an Arkansas summer camp by singer Amy Lee and original guitarist Ben Moody. The basic dynamic tension between hammer-of-Thor instrumental heaviness and soaring feminine power vocal has driven the band's progress from GRAMMY®-laden, multiplatinum 2003 studio debut, Fallen — featuring the rap-rocked "Bring Me to Life" (with Paul McCoy of 12 Stones), also included on the soundtrack to the Ben Affleck movie Daredevil — through excellent live album Anywhere but Home, to 2006's The Open Door: check out killer opener "Sweet Sacrifice."
