Richard Ashcroft is, arguably, the most charismatic, captivating and effortlessly cool singer in all of alt-rock 'n' roll — a worthy heir to Jim Morrison, whose soaring stage presence and supersized charisma seem to have been encoded in his genes. After his infamously wild days with the Verve, Ashcroft went solo and proved, with debut Alone With Everybody (2000), that the lizard king within him was as electrifying as ever. The muse has remained strong, through 2006's Keys to the World — with standout tracks like the soulful "Music Is Power" and the storming "Why Not Nothing?" — to 2010's United Nations of Sound, which parted waves with the awesome grandeur of "Are You Ready?," shook mountains with the sonic saber-rattling of "Born Again" and touched hearts with the sublime mellowness of "She Brings Me the Music."
