Comment:
Friends who think they know my tastes (once summed up as "a chainsaw running amock in a parrot-house") are usually baffled by my fondness for Pet. Can't see why; technically, she's one of the great pop singers equipped with a voice that's simultaneously light, strong & flexible and blessed with crystal clear diction. The comparison I like to use is that if Dusty was the British Aretha, the Pet was our Dionne.Plus, she brought to the fledgling UK pop scene a touch of continental class & sophistication. Is it too preposterous to claim that she opened the door for the later acceptance of the likes of Air & Stereolab?
Side one concentrates on her musical partnership with the undersung Tony Hatch (her Baccharach?)while side 2 demonstrates her interpretive skills on a bunch of covers.
Feedback:
Woo boy, this is good. I've got a thang for Petula as well (and Dionne for that matter). I love Petula's "Happy Together."
great tribute! i don't know her so much, so i would like to hear this mix one day if possible. what you think of sandie shaw?
I love Petula! What a voice....
I agree that Pet is the British Dionne, but I would have to say that Cilla is the British Dionne-wannabe. I recently read an interview with Dionne, in which she said if she sneezed on a recording, Cilla would have sneezed in the same place on her version. I know Cilla often released her version of Bacharach/David songs in the UK before Dionne's. Pet had class.
