Comment:
When hunting down the artists that made Queen Queen, rest assured we searched far and we searched wide. If there's a guitar god lurking inside Queen — that would be Brian May — then let us introduce you to his spirit guide, Jimi Hendrix, who drops a fuzz-bomb of speaker-shredding intensity over the falsetto vocal backup in "Crosstown Traffic." Like Queen, David Bowie's glam roots frequently poke up through his polished surface, and in "Oh! You Pretty Things" he coyly vamps across the line between camp and cabaret, with a bit of music hall honky-tonk tossed in for good measure. And if ever a group defined the concept of pre-"Bohemian Rhapsody" vocal sophistication, it's The Beach Boys, who bring a level of absolute gorgeousness to "God Only Knows" that's still the platinum standard to which artists aspire. With musical mentors ranging from Led Zeppelin to Peggy Lee, Queen left no corner of the musical universe unexplored as they prepared to ascend their throne.
