Comment:

And so our story begins, on a dark, rainy morning on the California coast....

"You say you're ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS, but the clouds are lifting and I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW. Let's go find A PLACE IN THE SUN. Hop into my LITTLE GTO and I'll put on some CRUSIN MUSIC. I LOVE BEACH MUSIC!"

"Hey ease up on the pedal HIGHWAY STAR! - DEAD MAN'S CURVE is just ahead."

"But I CAN'T DRIVE 55, you know that. DON'T WORRY, BABY, we'll make it. Well, we're here, and nothing beats SURF CITY and the CALIFORNIA SUN IN THE SUMMERTIME. Be sure to watch traffic and WALK-DON'T RUN. THE SEA isn't going anywhere."

"Are you ready to CATCH A WAVE, SURF RIDER?"

"This BANZAI WASHOUT is becoming a real TAXIDERMIST SURF. I can't even HANG TEN! We better get back ON THE BEACH before we get stuffed. So where's the boyfriend? You know, THE GIRLS ON THE BEACH are just FLESH FOR FANTASY to him. It doesn't take an EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH to know that HE'S A WHORE. I'd LET HIM RUN WILD if I were you."

"You're right. I've concluded that THIS TOWN AIN'T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US. WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE."

"I've got A GOOD IDEA. Let's go to HAWAII!"

"It's bizarre being in the air already. Good thing we had our boards with us. I feel like we're GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY, doing an ALPHA SURFARI to POLARIS, not just traveling MILES FROM OUR HOME."

"We'll, we might as well be A MILLION MILES AWAY now. We've got a LITTLE PAD with WIND CHIMES out on the edge of KUHIO BAY, with TOPAZ sand and roaring surf. Let's get the boards."

"Yikes, is that a TIDAL WAVE, or just the PIPELINE? Either way, GIMME DANGER! Let's go."

"That was a real DEATH TUBE. We just got SCALPED out there. Right now I WANNA BE SEDATED and lie ON THE BEACH."

"Hey, how long have we been here? I CAN HEAR MUSIC over at the club. Are you READY TO GO? Let's hop into the LITTLE RED CORVETTE. We'll enjoy some serene tunes on the sand."

(8 song concert at the club)

"So much for laid back concerts. I'M BORED."

"What did you expect? They're not going to ROCK THE NATION here at this beach. C'mon, HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW? This ain't ROCKAWAY BEACH, and you sure can't SURF COLORADO. This is one of the FAR AWAY PLACES BEYOND THE SEA that you've dreamed about, and now you've got it."

"You're right. Just look at that SURFER MOON over DIAMOND HEAD. What a sight!"

"The day is done. At least tomorrow, no matter what else is going on in the world, here in paradise one thing is always true: SURF'S UP!"

And so our odyssey ends.

Bwan has once again captured an experience through music. His latest mix offers something for everyone in his Beach Odyssey - his eclectic mix covers a broad range of genres and spans nearly 30 years.
Clearly, if any culturally-literate North American with a pulse hears this mix, then he or she will be transported to a place of legend, a dreamscape, and re-live experiences even that they may never have actually lived.
To be fair, this collection is not "EVERYthing for Everyone." Grounded as it is in the West ("The West is The Best" - J.M.) - it does not address the East Coast/Coney Island/NJ Boardwalk beach milieu - and to that end, excludes some arguably relevant early Springsteen/Southside Johnny/etc. offerings, but to have included that would have been a project too big to stand on its own, and I think Bwan recognizes this.
Still, note again what Bwan did NOT include - and this show's Bwan's prudent restraint in crafting his experience. There is NO "Jaws" soundtrack and there is no pop-culture kitsch reminiscent of the unforgivably tired Frankie Avalon camp. To that end, this Odyssey is one I want to take.
Now, where did I put that sunscreen. . .
