Comment:

50 Cent's first official single ("In da Club") soared straight to #1, but he wasn't the only one living life up in the VIP. Ask any DJ of the last decade and they'll tell you about the explosion of synthetic-swagger-oozing bangers that owned clubs like bottle service. Bang your head to "Whoa!" from Bad Boy's Black Rob, a track sculpted both for the fellas grindin' it out on the street and those tearin' it up on the floor. After all, Curtis Jackson wasn't the only MC able to project luxury-car cool and state-pen menace; with its black-magic strings and angelic coos, Jay-Z's "Threat" echoes the off-the-gauge rage of vintage Fiddy. Which says nothing of "We Fly High," written by Diplomats affiliates Jim Jones and Max B: The track is as smooth and simple as a milkshake — a slice of '00s New York street rap complete with singsong hooks, schoolyard-ready catchphrases, and champagne confidence. Where the previous decade had been about the grime, these cuts were all about the sparkle, with Jadakiss, Cam'ron, Fabolous, Lloyd Banks, and more joining 50 behind the velvet rope.
