Comment:

Game Theory were one of the more intriguing of the jangle-pop bands that populated the college radio airwaves in the mid-80's, most notably for Scott Miller's unusually clever lyrical sense and willingness to blend Big Star hooks with more complicated (almost prog-ish) song structures. Although they had a couple breathtakingly great songs ("Erica's Word," "24"), they were kept out of the top tier of the pop ranks by annoyingly thin production and (especially early on) the use of cheesy new wave synths. The last couple GT albums got kinda dull, so Miller regrouped with a new band, the Loud Family, which had a heavier, more dense sound. Though still offering up a few pop nuggets, Loud Family was far more musically complex (occasionally bloated) but kept interesting by the intelligent wordplay and sonic adventurism.

I have to agree with the assesment of Loud Family. I liked Game Theory much better. I still enjoy Lolita Nation with all it's wierdness. Blaze Of Glory was issued in a trashbag. I recall that record being given to me by the owner of Stan's Record Bar. Nice collection.

This is great! Please save me a copy. I used to love this band, but lost track of them after "Lolita Nation" - that was a lot to digest at once. "Here it is tomorrow" is a great, great tune. Nice!

Another good one Marc. I've always like these guys, especially Scott Miller's voice. I think I still have yet to hear all four sides of Lolita Nation, even though I bought it when it came out.

I'm really, really interested in having one of these, so feel free to dub it off of your hard drive. :-) Do NOT send it, though, until we organize an extensive formal trade... which may take a month or two, as my burner is down and I'm still behind on past trades.

Love Scott Miller, one of the best things to come out of Davis, Ca. I sold him an airbrush once when the Loud Family were just getting together (they wanted to airbrush some sort of backdrop for their show). I mentioned that I had loved Game Theory and ended up on the guest list for the show. It was a great performance! This mix hits all my favorites, nicely done, I'd love to hear it someday.

how many times did I go into School Kids records in Ann Arbor in the later 80s and not buy any Game Theory!! Still never heard em, but would like to. Care to check out any of mine for a trade?

If there ever was an "official" anthology, I'd hope Scott et al would consult this list. The only three missing tracks that I'd add would be "Date with an Angel," "White Blues," and "Curse of the Frontier land."
