Comment:

I've been making an annual mix called "Grown Up All Wrong" to commemorate my birthday for I don't know how long now. Typically they've merely been throw downs of favorite tunes without any of the usual self-conscious mixing concerns. This year, I thought, demanded a more focused theme. At first, I was going to explore songs about age, but sometime around Orson Welles' double bummer of "I Know How It Feels To Be Young (But You Don't Know How It Feels To Be Old)" I thought, "When the fuck will I ever want to listen to this mix?" Inspired by last month's eccentrics themed issue of MOJO, I'd recently been working on a celebration of great sonic visionaries & decided to embrace that theme for this year's model. Some notes - Though my chosen Robert Wyatt tune was sadly dropped, he does appear on the Syd cut, playing what surely is one of the most unsettling drum patterns in rock. The Beach Boys' & Soft Boys' tracks are meant to highlight the geniuses of Brian Wilson & Robyn Hitchcock respectively. This long version of "Heroes & Villains" is one of the many outtakes of that song I downloaded while compiling "Diamonds in the Sand". Chris Knox's entry was a hold over from the original age theme. Would gladly listen to this one many times in a row. Was there ever a band with as many amazingly talented people than Can? Track 12 was produced by Lee Perry. Wanted to find a something he sang on also, but the sentiments of the lyrics on this one are pure Scratch. Always thought it'd be a boss song for The Clash to have covered. Not certain about the origin of "Hoboism". Certainly a demo/live outtake, it features the Captain free-forming, accompanied only by guitar. The title of track 15 is a quote from Moondog, translated into Japanese & sung by Sakura Whiteing. If you want to know more about any of these artists, just ask Adam Bristor! 8^D

Ha! This is great stuff, needless to say, and you showed much more self-control when it came to the notes than I have been able to, as of late. And I've seen a lot of covers on this site, but this one just may be my new favorite.

Starts off with an excellent one-two punch of Meek & Syd and keeps it up. Extra points for Viv and Moondog.
