Comment:

Once I hit on the idea of topping & tailing w\ covers of the Kinks Klassik, this one essentially compiled itself.Side 1 Track 1 is probably the worst quality track any AoTMer has ever attempted to place on a mix but it does have historical interest not least as it shows what stumbling duffers the youthful Wyatt, Hopper, Ayers et al could be; also, the riff was appropriated for S1T2 and finally, as I say, when taken in conjunction w\ the last track, lends the mix some sort of conceptual coherence. S1T3: a relatively recent cover of one of Ayers' key compositions. S1T4: From Kevin's debut solo album; backing provides by erstwhile Softs colleagues. S1T5:Lol played sax in The Whole World, here he's joined by Ayers, Wyatt & bassist Archie Leggatt. S1T6: Composed by Ayers arranged by Wyatt. S1T7: Radio version of another "Joy Of A Toy" track. Leggatt back on bass but the star is guitarist Ollie Halsall. S1T8 Halsalls break-through group. S1T9: taken from side 2 of Tippets sprawlong opus. Mike Patto among the vocalists, past, present & future Soft Machinists include Wyatt, Nick Evans, Marc Charig, Elton Dean, Roy Babbington, John Marshall & Karl Jenkins. S2T1: written by Dean, also used as part of the climax to "Septober". S2T2: featuring Tippett on piano, Evans on Trombone & Charig on cornet.S2T3 Another radio broadcast. The expanded Softs lineup with Dean, Evans & Charig on board. S2T4: "Backwards" is in fact the closing part of "Slightly All the Time" From Soft Machine's "Third".S2T5 bringing us full circle. I have to admit I didn't expect this Vol to turn out like it has, but as indicated earlier, sometimes these projects take on lives of their own.
I'm expecting Vol 4 to contain shorter, more vocal-orientated tracks. Still, you never can tell...
