Raphael Saadiq
Comment:
If we had to nominate a life-guard for the new pool of soul-revival talent — into which Amy Winehouse, Adele and Cee Lo Green have all spectacularly plunged — then one name dominates all contenders: Raphael Saadiq. Raised in Oakland, California, and schooled on gospel, he toured with Prince in the mid-'80s, formed Tony! Toni! Toné! at the end of that decade, then eased his way slowly but surely into a solo career via supergroup side-project Lucy Pearl . . . and the upshot, as we enter this second decade of the 21st Century, is a cultured artist who knows his soul/R&B heritage back to front. We open with 2009 Stevie Wonder collab, "Never Give You Up", and 2010's Chuck Berry homage, "Radio". Saadiq anchors supergroup Lucy Pearl and goes gospedelic, in Next Steps.
