Comment:
Like the band's mythological namesake, an evil spirit that devoured a vast variety of innocently sleeping figures, Incubus developed their far-flung sound by attacking an array of ripe and ready influences. You simply couldn't grow up in Southern California, as they did, without memorizing the gaunt, angelic ballad "Under the Bridge." From the Chili Peppers, Incubus developed a knack for fusing fat-bottom funk with achingly gorgeous melodies. But the five-piece also knew how to raid their parents' crates, headbanging alongside the Viking crunch of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"; fact is, a quick skim of guitarist Mike Einziger's mile-high guitar lines reveals a childhood spent poring over every guitar magazine with Jimmy Page on the cover. Nor is it easy to ignore the impact of the grunge godfathers who preceded them — particularly Soundgarden, with their dazed and disoriented anthem "Black Hole Sun." But that's Incubus, fusing the best parts of classic rock, '90s alternative, and nü-metal into a post-modern package that boasts everything from timeless rock gods, like The Who and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, to such funk-fortified institutions as Primus and Mr. Bungle . . . and so much more.
