Comment:
Okay, it's not all technically "Pop" but it's all Brit. This is a mirror image mix--one of those things that only makes sense on a cassette-- that surprisingly worked out well (i.e. I was able match the order of each artist on the first side with a song on the second side). This mix is full of strange associations. I think that Sleeper had a rivalry with Elastica when both groups were existent. "Burning the Ground" is made up of bits and pieces of Duran Duran songs (I like the part where they splice the soundbite of "Girls" --from 'Girls on Film' against "Boys' from "The Wild Boys", a theme repeated in the Blur song. Heavenly's "Art School" is a cover of The Jam original. And upon hearing this mix, my friend Karin commented that she thought of The Housemartins as "the happy Smiths" . The real, morose Smiths are not represented here, but will appear in mixes to come.
Feedback:
I never knew that Heavenly covered Art School...and I like a person who isn't afraid to put a little Wham! Fantastic on a mix. Good stuff.
'Art School ' is on the Space Manatee 45 which also has a cover of The Flaming Groovies "You Tore Me Down" . As for Fantastic, I was a big Wham! fan in junior high (yes, yes, that was a while ago) and at the time didn't realize that Fantastic was by far the superior album (compared to Make it Big, though there are a few on the latter that I will probably cannibalize onto a mix...so I don't have to listen to the whole album ever again, unless I want to relive seventh grade, and really, who wants to do that? The first time was enough....
This looks excellent. I've always loved the Housemartins, Heavenly and Blur, as well as the sorely missed Sleeper (three and out) and Elastica (two and out)
Speaking of Sleeper: Elvis Costello does a surprising quiet version of "What Do I Do Now" on the bonus disc of the Rhino reissue of "All This Useless Beauty"
Why are the English Beat called The English Beat - in England they're the Beat - is there a U.S. Beat ? I like House Martins as Happy Smiths - it's definitely eclectic this mix and ABC followed by Blur is well..it's just...Brit Pop
